This really is down to personal choice.  If you are planning a beach holiday or a holiday to go surfing then the closer you get to the beach the better.  If you plan a holiday touring different areas within a county the precise location may be less of an issue.  Generally the more flexible you can be regarding location and dates the better your chances are of getting a late deal or availability in peak season.  If you have a location in mind then it’s probably best to book up as early as you can to avoid the risk of losing out.  Many operators allow you to pay a deposit with the balance to be paid a few weeks before your holiday. 

Do watch out for the extras though as most will try and sell you cancellation or travel insurance.  We are not saying that you shouldn’t buy them just be aware of what you are getting, if you need it and if you could get more suitable cover elsewhere e.g. annual travel insurance may be better if you are planning a few holidays.
